02 Bonneville Monsoon Speaker Replacement
 

Ok so I have done some research on different forums and the internet in general. But I can't wrap my head around what is needed for speakers. Right now I just want to replace the front door speakers. I have the monsoon system and from what I can tell I need speakers with 2 Ohm Impedance. I have found two different sets by infinity that I believe will work.

Now is the more expensive of those two really going to be worth the extra 60 bucks? Also if someone knows of speakers even better with a better price tag or if I am completely off here let me know please.

I am keeping the stock head unit and the stock Monsoon amplifier.

I also need to know what the stock monsoon systems RMS and Peak power are for all the speakers if anyone knows

you can go several ways, ive only ever gone one way so ill say that up front, the stock gm stuff sucks. its low power and poor audio quality and on all the bose ones and that ive just started over. spending 200 on one channel doesnt really make sense to me and those are going to be quiet and flat becase the stock amp is no where near that power. a decent higher power HU and some appropriatly sized components will blow that away. and you can get the new cool stuff like usb, ipod control, and bluetooth

I'm with JW. On my 02 I replaced EVERYTHING in the car. The HU, all the speakers, and I used a new amp.

I didn't go all out, but I didn't get bottom of the barrel either, and it sounds 100x better than the stock stuff.

x3 on rip it out and do it right.

I think you can do what I did for less than $800.

depends on what your sound goals and what type of music you like. i think you can get a hu for about 200 and speakers 6x9's and 6.5's for maybe 200-250. oviously will be better with an amp and higher power speakers but a well matched hu and speekers will still sound a ton better than stock.

Don't even need to spend that much on a HU.

The one I currently have (which will be going in the truck) was only $80.

It's got the same EQ capabilities and power of the $200 ones. It's HD/Sat Radio ready. The only thing it doesn't have is USB or Bluetooth, but that's because I bought it before the BT thing was all the rage.

I'm in the market also. BUT, I don't want 600 pounds of speaker box in the trunk. I'd like to just replace the HU, speakers and Bose amp.

My music preference is rock, heavy rock, some metal, (old school Metallica). None of that crap that causes seismometers in Japan to go off=rap, R&B etc.

Basically my goal is, I want to FEEL the punch of the drums, and hear the crystal clear highs of cymbals. ALL AROUND ME. Not the punch from the trunk, or the highs from the front. EVERYWHERE!

I listen to rock and country. I have a great set up for highs and mids. To feel the drums though, you WILL need a sub. Just one though, and a 10 inch is perfect for the "punch" of rock drums.

What is your "professional" opinion of those bass tubes?

For what you want? Perfect. Get the amped version.

Mom had one back in the day in her 86 Monte, wired directly to the rear speakers, not on their own path. It was good enough to make the rap I listened to back then sound good to me. But, it was also responsive enough for her rock music.

Well I really dont want to get into replacing everything. It's just that from what I can tell the speakers are the weak point of the monsoon sound system and I want some new speakers that wont distort like the stock ones, you know something that is just clearer. I think I have all the power I really want for right now I just want the sound to be better.

In that case, go with some 4 Ohm speakers to save money.

The impedance difference is negligible, and you won't really hear the difference. I bet your speakers are distorting because they're starting to tear. I know somebody that doesn't have the Monsoon system, just the regular, and his stuff gets really loud without distorting.

i tried aftermarket polk 4 ohm speakers with the stock amp on my last car. it was the amp that was the problem. not counting phisically damaged speakers. i replaced the amp with a 400w for the front and rear deck and it was a whole lot louder without distortion and more full highs and lows at all levels.

I have my old Monsoon amp somewhere. If for whatever reason somebody wants it to play with, I'll gladly send it your way for the cost of shipping.

Correct me if I am wrong here but wont swapping the amp screw up other things in a Bonneville though?

like what? your onstar and that goes through the head unit, there are ways to replace that too but the amp isnt any thing extra

Oh well if the amp doesn't control anything and it wont mess anything up then I may as well look into replacing the amp as well. Any suggestions for amps with the stock head unit? As well as speakers to compliment the new amp?

Can i keep the setup like it is? Using the rear 6X9's as "subs"? I really don't want to start installing actual subs.

I guess what I want is some good base with real nice mids and highs.

subs are easy peasy to do i wont ever go without subs in any vehicle again, im running bose 6 speaker system in my truck with 2 12" kenwoods running on a kenwood amp and the HU is stock my trucks bangin haha

Well if you were closer I would ask for your help to do my system lol. I just have zero experiance with audio. I could afford the equipment but not the prices for a professional install at the same time.

lots of people on this site have done what you want to do, someone will be able to help if you get hungup. what you want is full range speakers and a matching amp. budget will dictate what you get really. sonic electronics and crutchfield, amazon are good places to get stuff. i got polk db's they are reasonable sound great with a 400w peak amp(100 per ch)
