When i have a cold windsheild the wipers tend to chatter on the return stroke. This happens until the wind sheild gets warm from the defroster and then it stops chattering any hints.

Well how old are the wipers? Also, do you know what brand they are? In my experience is you get what you pay for when it comes to wipers. If its cold out the blades are probably getting hard which is causing them to skip a bit, causing your chirping. A good thing to try is to give your windshield a thorough cleaning, and then apply a couple coats of rainX. It should cause less friction and might help with the chirping.

I've noticed chirping from using too much Rain-X... but not on the return, just on the way up. How old are the blades, and what brand? This can really play a factor as well.

Try taking a clean rag and grip your fingers around the rubber blade, just run your fingers down the rubber tightly to remove and dirt off of them and see if that helps with the jumping a little too.

I personally can't stand Rain-X. It leaves a slight haze on the windshield, even when applied lightly. I guess I'm just very sensitive to it.

However, I found that I get better results with a clean windshield and good wipers. I prefer ExactFit wipers.

I've cleaned a severely road-greased windshield in the following manner:
1) wash with detergent.
2) clean with a degreaser, rinse thoroughly. Avoid getting the degreaser on the paint.
3) clean using paper towels dampened with Varsol. Make sure this doesn't get on the paint, and avoid rubber seals.

It'* a pain, but I've tried lots of cleaners with no success. The above process worked well.

The only windshield reservoir cleaner that I've ever been happy with is from 20/10.

If you use the RainX glass treatment it is supposed to haze after you apply it, then you buff it off, water just falls off my windshield now
