My driver side wheel bearing assembly is dying. I replaced the P-side last spring. My 00 has 120k on it - is this typical for bearing failure? Does anyone have a Helms manuel they can xerox or reference for me? I'd like to just buy the hub and bolt it on but I would need to know torque specs and anything else special. Any help is appreciated.

Wheel bearing failure can happen at any mileage, typical is around 50-100,000miles.

Many have the manual and should be able to provide those specs.

there have been a few members that have had the wheel bearings replaced on the 00+ i would say just a reguar maint. replacement

wheel bearing are VERY common failures in 2000+ models, some see failuires as low as 30-50,000 miles, if you are still on your original at 120, i would say that you are lucky that it has lasted this long.

Shawn, here are some torque specs for you. Wheel Bearing/Hub Bolts - (70 lb ft), Drive Axle Nut - (118 lb ft), Wheel Nut - (100 lb ft) hope that helps a little.

I'm ordering a Helm manual- there is a enough new stuff on this car that I'm not familiar with - I haven't done wheel bearings on a FWD car before. Took a look at it tonight and right away I can see I'll need to buy another socket for that nut. From what I can see I'll need to use jack stands under the frame so I can turn the wheel outwards. Looks like the caliper mounts to a bracket, which mounts to the steering knuckle. After brakes are off the shaft (from transaxle- not familiar with proper term - used to working on older muscle cars) can be unbolted from the hub, and then the hub can be unbolted from the knuckle.

With the wheel turned outwards is there enough room to get an impact gun in there if my caliper bracket bolts are stuck?

Incidently it looks like Helms is having a GM shop manual sale until Jan 31st. Price is $67. My camaro manual cost $100 years back.

You have the procedure basics right there.

I haven't done a 00, however typical GM FWD is straight forward
Support
Pull wheel
Pull caliper and disc (ensure you support caliper weight and don't let it hang on the hose)
Pull axle nut
Holes next to lug nut studs allow you access to the bolts for wheel bearing
I think they make the wheel bearing bolts as torx
