I live in northern michigan. Around the Traverse city area.

just a few more symptoms I noticed today while driving. the vibration at idle only seems to be once the car has warmed up and the idle has settled. Also, placing the car into gear seems to be a bit rougher than what it should be. Almost a clunk, but not really that bad. I also hear and feel the same slight clunk when getting back into the gas. Ive noticed other cars do this, but this seems to be a bit more than it should.

oh yeah. there is one more thing that i changed. I changed the transmission filter and fluid. the fliter looked ok. I took it apart and didnt find any signs of wear. the fluid was fairly dark, but did not feel gritty. again, this was after the vibration existed.

whats the normal idle for this car? I was thinking maybe my idle is too low. Mine when warm idles around 700 rpm. around 550 when in gear.

Is it engine shaking or vibration?

cause L36/L67 are known to "shake" at idle.

If it vibrate and you have normal tranny and motor mount... a bad harmonic balancer??

the engine does seem to shake and vibrate quite abit. Im not sure if its normal or not. I really dont know anyone else that has this engine . I did have a 96 monte carlo with the 3.1 and I have a 2003 impala with the 3.4. These engines are way smoother than this one. It seems to shake a bit too much. But, I have heard from allot of people that its normal for these engines. my concern is a pretty bad vibration at idle felt through the car and it even seems to make noise in the dash.

I was also thinking harmonic ballancer. I painted a line from the center to the outside of the pulley through the rubber. It hasnt moved at all. I really dont know of a better way to check it. It does appear to not be running true. the outside pulley looks good, but the inside looks like it is out of round at idle.??? Does anyone have any ideas?

thanks again.

the 3100 and 3.4 are 60* engines. Because of geometry and physics, they will always be a lot more smooth than the 3800, which is a 90* engine.

The vibration being new is probably a slight vacuum leak or the plugs/wires in need of replacment. 80K on the car is a good amount of mileage for (probably) the first set of plugs.

While GM says you wouldn't need a tune up for 100K...trust me, the plugs are no longer gapped where they should be. (I checked this on my truck a while back)

With the motor moving that much, most likely a vacuum line is cracked or torn causing excess air to get in a idle and you would not notice at normal running speeds.

I will check closer for a vacuum leak. I have already replaced the plugs and wires. there were arc marks between a couple of them so i decided it was time. A friend of mine has a hoist so i am going to put it up on that and take a close look under the car as well.

this is a very responsive board. I thank all of you for your input.

I had another question.

I was wondering how much movement i should see in the motor mounts ( the solid ones on the passenger and drivers side). If I have someone put the car in gear and lightly press on the gas.. it looks as though the mount compresses about 3/4 of an inch. the drivers side compresses a little more, maybe an inch.

thanks .
