Tranny Died(fixed now) OUCH!

Tranny died(164,924 miles) on the way to Costco without warning. Went to take off from a red light and it would just rev up and move very slow, put it in 2nd and it took off. After shopping i nursed it home and played with it in all the gears, it slips bad in 1st, 3rd and 4th, It slips in 2nd but not as bad as the other gears. The tranny fluid was a little low but above the add mark. So i guess i will find a shop here in Sacramento to rebuild it. I'll let you know what the tranny shop says what was wrong with it.

The 4T65-E'* are a bit of a different animal... They are designed to be able to apply the TCC a a lower road speed than a 4T60-E... The 65-E will apply at a low speed allowing for a given amount of slip in the TC while applied at lower speeds improving fuel economy..
The 60-E would cook the converter clutch if it was allowed to slip in the manner the 65-E can
It almost sounds like a Thrust washer or 2 bit the dust...

Rod I think you are looking at 1700-2200 depending on what failed, and what amount of damage may have been done.... I am certain you will be replacing the input shaft among a few other hard parts as well as the converter..
But I will say you should fall into the 1700-2200 area depending on whats required

But remember, these converters are designed to withstand the light amount of slip that would be present under application of the TCC at a low roadspeed..
Its one of the reasons the Newer cars do a little better in the city as opposed to a 60-E..

The transmission shop said they would put in the DIY shift kit, so should i go with the 1/2"& 3/4" long spacers(medium) or should i put the 3/4"& 1" long spacers(hard shift) in ? Keep in mind that i run the stock PCM, so i don't get any help from it.

God i hate repair shops. I got 6 or 7 estimates and they were all $1400 to $1600 + hard parts. Got the car back and it drives good and all, but it set me back $2700(ouch), $1150 labor and $1400 parts. I also got an 24,000# tranny cooler so hopefully it won't get hot up in the mountains(up to 10,000' high). 12 items under $100, the torque converter was only $200. I have to call the shop to see what an "internal harness 35D-167A" is, it cost $116. I have the filter that came off of the tranny, it has 164,000 miles on it. We will bring it to the WCBF so we all can dissect it. They said they were surprised the tranny had that many miles on it with out ever touching it. Well Cindy just got back from a test drive and she thinks she got some 2nd gear wheel spin(GOD help this tranny).
