Have you ever had any work done on the suspension? Besides the intermediate steering shaft, the original tie-rod ends are a weak point. Generally, but not always, those will make sort of a clunking noise over bumps.

Tracy.. your post may be better off handled in another thread of your own. Because you should also mention the bumps you went over and the service stability warning.
Did the battery change fix these issues, or are they also still happening and the steering feels a little like a wife?

but I wasn't trying to. I'm sorry for the mis-interpretation. I brought up this possible issue of steering on my car in this topic because Archon said we haven't seen play in the steering to be a symptom of the interm.shaft issue thus far. Perhaps it could be a symptom, but folks don't generally notice it as much as they do creaking and clunking...??? Either that or this guy'* dealer is simply giving him the shaft (pun intended). Time will tell. :?:

When I replaced the intermediate shaft a couple of years ago, I thought I'd investigate the problem with the old one. This is the upper U-joint, the one that usually goes bad and starts to bind.
This is the shaft and the lower joint.
If any part of that gets sloppy enough to give an inch or two of play in the steering, that would be a dangerous situation.
