Cut 'n paste from a response I made on the '92-'99 forum:

---
I heard a similar noise when I was bleeding out my power steering system the other day. Sort of a dull thumping noise, like hitting concrete with a rubber mallet? Mine turned out to be the strut retaining nut catching and releasing on the rubber bushing in the strut mount (underneath the dust cap on my '95) as the wheels turned.

Default UPDATE ON BOING!

Ok the noise has gotten 10 times worse, almost to the point that it sounds like somethings broken. So i took the flashlight in there with someone turning the wheel back and forth...it seems ugly. The springs are jamming up and making the boing/cracking/popping noise. However the top piece (lacking the name for it) rotates on one and not the other. What disturbs me even more is that the entire strut seems to move forward and backward ALOT when the wheel is turned, it moves up the top too almost like it is bad? I don't know i wish i knew more about struts.....any other suggestions for this or is it time to get them replaced?

It sounds bad and time for the shop, hard to diagnose without seeing it but it sounds like your struts are shot or the top mount is broken?

Sorry that I didn't reply sooner, but if my car is a good indication, the spring is broken, right at the bottom, and it also toasted your bearing.

Again if my car is a good indicator, your strut is fine, but spring and strut bearing are going to need to be replaced. I wouldn't wait too long for the repair, because just as you stated, you've got the whole assembly rubbing in ways it'* not intended to move.

Good Luck, hope our still under warrenty!

Default UPDATE

UPDATE!!!! I FINALLY took it and had it fixed. I posted this a long, long time ago and the noise just kept getting worse. When the struts were taken off, the bearings were so bad they actually all fell out. The strut mounts were completly shot too. Struts were toast as well. I will be trying to get pics of the parts on here because they did save them for me at the shop. They said they've never seen them this bad and the car still working. Oh well another $800 down.

Thanks for the reply back, we've had more than a few strut bearings fail here in the 2k forum lately?
Do you think waiting over 6 months for the repair caused your struts to fail also or would those have needed replacement anyways?

i'm pretty sure waiting caused the struts to go, but I think if i had the work done I would have replaced them anyways while everything was apart.

UPDATE AGAIN So everything has been good for about a week now. But today I started hearing a grinding/rubbing noise coming from the front right strut. So i put it up on the lift and the spring has expanded and slipped over the spring seat. Just great, now I have to replace the springs as well because the other side is starting to do the same thing. Anyone heard of this before?
