Nismo, that'* not even CLOSE to remotely similar. Can we please keep this topic on track? There is very little to compare between a Maxima and a Bonneville other than the 4 rubber things that seperate the body from the asphalt.

I guess I should have been a bit more specific in my statement. GM starters haven't changed much over the years, so that is why the exploded view of that old one is still basically accurate. If you had looked at that (as you asked to see it) you would have, or should have, noticed that about the only thing that is the same between the two is that they have lots of wire in them.

Thanks for the info guys. Mark, the procedures were right on. Removed it yesterday afternoon and took to have rebuilt today. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Nismo, please make it a practice NOT to compare your Maxima to our Bonnevilles in the mechanical sections of this Forum. We don't need the added confusion. We have a vast amount of experience with GM FWD 3800'* here, and your Maxima isn't seeming to help.

You may have the effect of confusing or misleading a new member of this Forum.

Default Done!

I carried the starter to a repair shop and they put a new set of brushes in it. Total cost was $37.44, a whole lot better that $150 - $200 for a replacement. Was not much problem to remove and reinstall either. Thanks for your help.

jr's3800, not entirely sure if the 2000+ starters have reduction gear looking at the graphic representations & description of operation it doesn't appear to so. I'm curious too.

DG, when you had the starter motor out of the car, did it look to have a reduction gear on it? The motor frame would be slightly offset with respect to the pinion gear side of the whole assembly, no?

My 2000 has a gear reduction sterer on it. I pretty sure all the late model gm vehicles have gear reduction starters.
