Default Parking Brake Control

Has anyone ever repaired/replace the parking brake control on an '01SLE? Mine went to the floor and seems to have come unwound. The cable itself does not appear to be broken. It looks like ratcheting mechanism let go. How can I tell if it is broken or if it just needs rewound? Is it difficult to replace the entire thing? Dealer says a new one with the front cable is $49. Seems cheap.

Can't help you. Mine did the same in my 04 Tahoe but it was fixed under warranty. Unless nobody has had that problem, someone will chime in soon. If you decide to dig in and tear it apart yourself, let us know how the fix went.

From my readings..I believe you are the first to have this problem. $49 does seem a little "too good"

Just picked up the replacement. It actually is the whole pedal/ratchet and front cable assembly for $49. Surprise. Now all I have to do is figure out how to install it.

Default Parking Brake Control

Thanks, Archon. That looks exactly like what I have. I'll be working on it tonight.

Default Parking Brake Control

Procedures from Archon worked great. Took me a little under an hour, and I'm not Mr. Goodwrench. A little difficult for an old coot like me to squeeze under the dash to get to the control. A little wrestling getting the front cable out of the connector, but other than that, it was pretty straightforward. At the end of the Installation procedure it talks about turning and removing the cable tension pin. It only turns one way and everything kind springs into place and the cable tightens up at that point. It would be important to note that removal of this pin is LAST. I would warn against removing it at any other time. It comes "loaded" from the factory. Thanks again, Archon, and for all the other responses as well. This is really a great website!!!!
