Clearly the secret was having the engine slightly warm. I quickly gave up the idea of using a box end although in hindsight, had I tried it with the engine slightly warm, it might have worked. At any rate, I bought the split socket made for oxygen sensors($16), sprayed the sensor threads down with PB Blaster, let it sit for 30 minutes or so and was done in a few minutes.

Being exhaust related...a quick couple seconds of running will heat up the area and make it easy. Only thing to remember is that it'lll be hot as well.

$60 from gmpartsdirect but you have to add roughly 25% shipping and handling.
I had tried with the engine cold to get it out and absolutely no go, even after soaking it. A short spin around the block did the trick.
I had to laugh at the instructions with the new sensor because they said to use a torque wrench to do the reinstallation. Given the tight quarters where it is located, I'd love to see whoever wrote that try to use a torque wrench and have it accurate since you don't have a straight shot at it.
