Since I am not an automatic transmission technician, my vocabulary may be different than yours. What you are referring to is much more severe than what I am talking about. My comments are merely laymen'* terms to attempt to give an idea of what could be happening. I am not trying to get into a vocabulary lesson. I may have used a particular word that has a specific meaning in certain circles. My use of the word was much more general and not in that certain circle. Please excuse my ignorance of a specific term and focus on understanding the concept I was expressing.

No problem, just trying to offer some help. The transmission is a complex part. I have worked on them in a dealer and now I teach automotive classes for a state college. It is a complex subject and I try to teach my students in a way they can understand, we have students that come into our program that know nothing about cars and some that are more advanced. The last transmission that they do in my automatic class is a 4T60E, but I try to teach them the basics and not be brand specific so they can get into any type of transmission and identify the basic parts and have an understanding on how to fix them. Sorry for getting a little to involved was just trying to help.

Tinindian, you have no reason to apologize. Your knowledge and experience will be more than helpful here. While a person or two may not be looking for a vocabulary lesson, when doing long distance advice and diagnostics, proper terminology is a critical part of it. Please continue to be "too involved". We've got a few people who have torn down and rebuilt some transmissions here, but we can certainly use more help.

on a short jaunt into town earlier, i didn't notice the hard shifts near as much. My wife is now in chicago with the car for a work trip...said she didn't notice it shifting as hard as it did yesterday when we drove it after the fluid change. And yes, she could tell the hard shifts...so much it is working free some now.

is it possible to unhook the battery for some time to get the car to erase some memory on the tranny settings?? to relearn it as it was said earlier?

Disconnecting the battery will have the PCM go into a relearn for the transmission. Give it 30 minutes or so to be sure. Or just continue driving without it. It will adapt over a short time.

well, when the car is back.....i will unhook the battery.

also, it was asked earlier what was used to check for codes at dealer. it was the portable Tech system they use for checking codes on GM autos'. Not just a standard OBD-II scanner, i have one of those already.

Thanks

I had the exact symptoms you were saying: hard shifting after highway driving, and a whine. Had my PCS replaced at a cost of $585. No problems since. I had this problem for about 10 month before I finally did something. Luckily, I had no damage to the transmission.

Thanks Archon, Will keep trying to work people through these problems, and as we all know, long distance diagnosis is not easy.

It'* probably a GM Tech II made by OTC. Not really much better than the commercial Actron tools that can monitor realtime values and display them. The OTC tools are expensive, but they are also the "Official" diagnostic tool for GM vehicles, have been for years, so they get their software from the GM folks who stuff the bits & bytes into the ECM/PCM to start with.

happy to report that i don't notice the hard shifting anymore after being driven for a distance. evidently the fluid being as bad as it was must have been causing alot of my problem. wife took it on trip to chicago and back and only noticed couple hard shifts shortly after leaving, but rest of trip was smooth she said. as well, my last few days to work i have not noticed it either.

I will probably give her a few months and then do another treatment of trans tune and a fluid/filter change just to make sure i got it all out.

thanks
