Default Gear shift lights

Can anyone tell me if the gear shift panel letters are supposed to be backlit in a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville SE? I am not referring to the gear letters on the dashboard, but the ones actually printed on the gear shift panel itself in the middle console. Thanks!

They light up on my SSEi, I would assume they should light up on your SE too. It'* a fair amount of work but you can take that piece out and replace the bulbs in it.

First tilt your steering wheel all the way down, take the dash trim off, there are two screws above the gauge cluster, gently pull off the trim and un plug the connectors as you go. Take off your shift ****, there is a horeshoe shaped clip on the back side you need to take out with a small flat head screwdriver, it slides right out. Lift the shift **** up and off. Lift up your armrest and remove the two screws. lift up the top of the console. There will be two bolts holding the gear selector in place. Take those out and unhook the electrical connector. You can get a small flat head screwdriver and gently open the selector up and replace the bulbs. Follow the steps to put it back together.

I am also having similar problems:

-- The lights on my gear shifter are off.
-- The lights on some of my climate control system are off (I think it was the right half), but when they are selected the indicator light comes on (still not backlit)

All other lights seem to work fine. I could not locate a fuse that was burned-out.
