Default Gear/Humming Sound -NOT WHEEL HUB?!!

Hello All,

No luck finding another post with the same problem (2 hours looking).

Please read and help if you can! :o

Gear type sound coming from the front left engine compartment, just started yesterday but is already much louder. Here is a list that makes it different than a wheel hub noise:

A gear sound, increases with car speed, but not proportionate to wheel turn (not a tire prob.)
Does not change with swerving or bumps.
Steering wheel has slight vibration.

Also, the wheel hubs were replaced at 34K, car now has 142K. while driving at any speed and put in nuetral, the noise remains.

Thanks ahead for any help!

Stupid question, I know, but what kind of tires do you have and how old are they?

Brand new 6 months ago. I think they are BF Goodrich.

Could it be the power steering pump?
Would explain the noise changing with engine speed, the steering wheel vibration, and the noise continuing when the engine is in neutral.

So why would this rule out bearings? Sounds like one has gone out again. Based on the last 2 Bonne'* I've had you've had real good bearing luck from 34k to 142K!

Still sounds like a wheel hub to me. I just replaced my driverside over the holiday weekend, same symptoms. The first one I had to replace (months ago) changed sound when I swerved, but the one over the weekend I replaced did not. Good luck.
