gaz gauge help please

gaz gauge help please
Hi and happy new year everyone.
When I first start my car, my gaz gauge needle starts going crazy. In reality I have 1/4 tank, for example, and it jumps to 1/2, 3/4, F than back down to 1/2, 3/4, 1/4, it goes nuts for a whilr than settles down. My Mileage to Empty jumps up and down as well. It takes a while until it finally settles down?
Now I'm not sure how accurate it is? Any suggestions?
