Anyone done their own front strut mounts? I've done a lot of car work, but never had the occasion to pull a strut. I know I'll need a spring compressor (borrow from auto parts store), but what else? Is there a write-up for a Bonneville or similar car on the 'net? Local good shop wants about $500 to do them both, including the alignment. I didn't think that was TOO bad, but I figure that the parts are about $150 total for mounts/bearings, I could do it myself, and then just pay him the $69.95 for the alignment.

how many miles are on your car? If your taking the mounts off, you should really replace the struts while you have it appart too

99k. Honestly, they feel fine and aren't leaking. If I had to go back in another 25-50k and replace them, I don't mind. The chances of me having the car past another 2 years and about 25k is remote anyway, based on my past. I go through lots of vehicles.

Are you having problems with the mounts? If not, then bearings and struts may be enough. Here'* some instructons.

Just the clunking. I've done all the checks, and I'm sure that'* what it is. It'* only on the driver'* side, but if it'* bad, the other isn't far behind. Thanks!!!

If I can just do bearings and not the mounts, that would be fine. I'm sure after I do it once, it'll be easier next time if I have to go back in.

Why not just lube them while they are on the car?

I didn't know you can lube the strut bearings on the car.

It isn't too hard to pull the struts and the local parts store can help with the spring compressor. At 99K, chances are pretty good you'll fine a bad strut, and that could be the clunking noise. Once the spring is off, it'* much easier to check the strut. Good Luck.

are you sure it is the strut mounts???? I was told that by a local garage also and come to find out it was the intermediate steering shaft not the strut bearing.

No offense, but I know the difference. I worked at a large Chevrolet dealership as a service advisor, and I've heard/felt the steering shaft on 2000+ Impalas many many times. This is most definitely the strut bearing.

Yes...I agree, def a bearing. My 97 had same prob. When I cut the wheel, creeking like something was dry on both sides, turned out was bearings, after a mechanic said it was a steering shaft lol, working a1 now.
