It appears that my front transmission mount is leaking red fluid. Now Im not the pickiest guy you ever knew but I do NOT like anything leaking on my garage floor. It appears that the red fluid that looks like tranny fluid is coming right out of the mount. Any tips, tricks or look out for when I change that thing? It looks fairly basic. I had a local price of $50 for the mount.

The mounts are liquid filled. Leaking would mean it'* time to do something.

There are two routes around here. Replacement mount or a solid mount. The solid mount is frequently made with hockey pucks and firms up the floppiness of the stock front mount.

Search Hockey Puck and Harofreak00 as the author. He did a nice write up.

I originally thought the OEM front mount (hockey puck one) was liquid filled. When I installed a new one, I had the old one cut apart to see how this “liquid filled” thing was made. To my surprise, there was no liquid in it nor any evidence that it ever had anything in it.

If not, your “red fluid that looks like tranny fluid” might actually be tranny fluid.

Well it was the mount, by the time I changed it all the fluid had leaked out. Here is a pic of the old one. Prices were wildly varied around here. From $49.99 to $108. I paid $49.99 for an anchor brand. Which is what all the local parts stores carried except the dealer. Straightforward change. :

i like the fact that NO one who has built a solid mortor mount has taken it out and said H*** NO WORST MOD I EVER DID !
i like mine (110,000+ miles on it). lift the hood, rock the car(back and forth) in park, see all that movement even with a new mount.
that is not good for all the fule lines, electrical lines, exhaust pipe so on and so on.
it will also help the torque steer. it will help put the power to the ground.
i made a 3" wide motor mount for my car, but i made a 2 1/2" wide motor mount for a friend and it works just as GOOD.
we used a 2 1/2" hole saw and cut holes (wafers) out of the sidewall of an old truck tire. cost for his solid mount $0.00 and he has 40,000 miles with out any problems.
if i had to make a new one for my car i would use the wafers made out of the sidewall of an old truck tire.
the distance between the top of the BOTTOM cross member and the bottom of the TOP
motor mount bracket is 3 5/8".

If you guys want a solid mount thats ok with me. It may be a small nitpicky thing but one day shortly before I discovered the engine mount was leaking fluid I drove the Bonny and noticed the engine seemed a little rougher on idle than I was used to. For now Im thinking that the fluid all leaking out of the mount allowed the transfer of the engine vibration into the cockpit where I could feel it. I was happy to put back an oe style mount to help reduce vibration.

I do appreciate all the help I can get on this board though. Its nice to be able to call on the experts that know what theyre talking about.

I’m still wondering about the “liquid filled” part. Mine was cut in half with a band saw and was bone dry inside – not even a film.
I was specifically looking for the oil because GM advertised liquid filled mounts for our cars IIRC.

I changed mine because the top of it looked just like yours.
Did it turn out that yours was leaking oil?

Yes mine was leaking there. Bright red fluid that looked like Transmisson fluid. I thouroughly checked the area , and while the transmission lines are in the area , I couldnt find anything else leaking, and now that Ive replaced it my garage floor is dry and the spot under the engine mount is dry. I don't think there is much more than an ounce or so in there when its new?
