Default Compass Calibration problem

I'm lost! Actually my compass is. Every 3-5 minutes it signals with the warning tone to recalibrate the compass. So I do, but then it does it again! I'm tired of driving in cirlcles all the time. Does anyone with a FSM know where the compass module is in the car so I can test it for proper power and grounding. I'm not sure if there'* a loose connection or if the module is shot. Has any one else had this problem? Any suggestions for a fix? If I don't get this compass thing fixed soon my wife will be telling me where to go!

On the 92-99, the compass module is in the trunk, near the trunk light. Many members with large subwoofers or amps have to relocate the module farther from it. Make sure you don't have anything like that, or even a large toolbox near yours.

This is not a typical part that can fail. It'* simply iner-woven coils of wire with a small current travelling through it. Aviation uses them too, ours on the Phantoms were called 'flux transmitters'. They sense the earth'* magnetic field. Any unexpected large piece of iron or steel other than the car'* frame and body could screw you up.

The car is a 2000 ssei. I have nothing in the trunk, did nothing to the car since the problem, just a trip to Cleveland and back. The way the thing beeps all the time it seems like something is loose but I don't know the system so I'm only speculating. It is very annoying though!

Need someone with 2k or newer to chime in on the compass module location. You may simply need to clean the contacts and re-seat the bugger.

Found it! Thanks Howard! I took the connector off the compas transponder in the trunk and re-seeded it back on. Hasn't needed calibration since, and before it was chiming almost every 5 minutes. And to think the dealer would have charged a $60 diagnostic fee just to tell me that! Thanks guys. Hope it solved the problem for good (fingers and toes crossed).

dang thing is setting off the calibration tone again. It goes off every 10-15 mins! What a pain. I wonder what is causing it to go off. Nothing is in the trunk or around the transponder to set it off. Maybe the module is shot???

Is your compass direction not accurate as indicated, or are you having problem with just the chime. If Compass is ok I would just disable the chime and get on with my life.
