check engine light, and other problems

I just picked up a dealer service manual for my 2000. I have several things beeping at me when I get in my car, service light is always on, And it won't pass emissions. (It says the coolent temp. is to low) what a bunch of crap! I've been told to go to autozone, and put it on the computer.
Question
1. will it give me an error code
2. Can I then look that code up in the book for the exact problem, and fix.

If you have an SES light, and you have the car scanned, you should get a trouble code. That code should be in your service manual, and depending on what it is, you may be able to fix it.
Sounds to me like your coolant temp. sensor is bad for one.

Yeh, but the temp does stay low for like a half hour. Doesn't heat up as quick as it used to. But the sencor is still probley bad, since it was heated up when I did the test. Also, the gauge seems to work fine. The gauge and the sensor arn't the same unit are they. Cause like i said the gauge works fine.

The computer only gives the cooling system a certain amount of time to come up to temperature and if it doesn't get there in time, it sets a code. So, if you are saying that the gauge eventually comes up to the correct temperature, it would seem the sensor is ok but perhaps the thermostat isn't closing properly when cold.
i would assume that if the car takes a long time to heat up, BUT does heat up eventually then your most likely going to find that your thermostat is sticking open

Thanks for all the info. It seems we fixed the problem. I believe it was the thermastat, but I changed both anyways. I then went to the emissions place, and guess what? I have to drive the car for a couple of days in order to build some sort of baseline in the computer. Clearing the codes gets rid of all of that apperantly. Thanks for the help.
