A, Congratulations!, you are the first one to remove the pan on your car. When the car is on the assembly line the transmissions have plugs in the oil filler orifice, it is pushed into the pan when assembled onto the car and does no harm.
Doesn't look like a plug you have found though, is the trans working normally?.
That info pertains to Ford transmissions.

i took the suspect piece to my local tranny shop to mount an investigation , he quoted me about $200 for repair, he was very very persistent that I'm missing a gear.....nope.
got em all

Darn..late to the party. Totally with the guys on teh temp sensor piece of flat metal. Likely it' got bumped and fell.

Can you please get a picture or 10 with the pan down. I'm sure that'* not a dowel pin from a band (recently pulled a few and it looks like a hex headed short bolt). That definately looks like a piece of the case.
