The filter is impregnated with charcoal.
One trick to keeping the system free from bacterial growth and gross smell is turning off the A/C periodically to let it dry out and not stay wet. That is a problem where I live.

I have 2 GM filters, and a GMframe, that i grabbed from a 00 Lesabre, and it works and fits awesome
in the mid year of the 01 they discontinued the Cabin air filter and the frame.
I know they also deleted the lighted door reflectors for 01. They must have saved a few thou.......and lost many more customers.

And I park outside on the driveway and leave windows down especially when there'* a breeze to move air through the car and the HVAC box.
And the HVAC can be programmed to turn on the blower for a time after the car is turned off to move air though the box to help clear the moisture. Needs a TechII or similar device to program--if I read my 03 manual correctly... That would help your problem. I assume it relies on outisde air temp to determine whether it turns on or not so it'* working when AC is used and not at 40 degree ambient temps.

if anyone doesn't have one, I grabbed one out of the 2000 SSEi that was in the yard here cause I saw this topic before I left. I don't need it, so make an offer if you want it. Was easy to get out.
So if I read this thread correctly, my 2003 SLE would have come without a cabin filter? If so,can I go back to the dealer (I bought her new) and demand they install one, or am I going to need to buy one and install (not a problem)?

You will need to buy one, The Fram mentioned earlier is easy to install just push in.
Also please put your year and trim level of your Bonny in the signature at the bottom. This can be done by editing your profile. It will help the Gearheads answer your questions.
DOH! HAd sig in there, but turned off by default. I found an awesome deal on rockauto.com - $16.49 with housing. Snagging both. This is a great forum - thanks for the assistance!
Received two filters from rockauto.com in three days, delivered on a Saturday. Popped the filter in (thanks to threads mentioned), and voila! Tremendous service for a great product.
