2001 SLE noise (pump?)
my moms bonneville (01 SLE) is making a lot of nose from the rear... my dad and brother think that its some sort of an air pump that is going almost all the time. does this car have air ride or something similar where there would be a compressor and lines back there? I at first thought it was a fuel pump but it runs too loud and too offten for me to think that its fuel pump... any ideas?

It sounds like the air compressor for the Automatic level Control System (ALC). Is the sound coming from inside the right rear wheel area?

What do you mean by all the time, if it is Alc (air pump you hear) it should be heard after each time you start the car and then stop .If it is all the time you must have a leak.

The air pump for the ride leveling struts runs about 30 seconds after you turn the key to on for a short burst to bring the pressure up. This is true whether the motor runs or not. Then it will run any time it senses the car is too low for more than 17 seconds or something like that until it raises the car up or reaches a maximum run time.

I dont think SLE'* have this feature, only SSEi'*, not sure.
and its ELC not ALC .
It should run like 5 second maximum at ignition"on" on startup.
From my experience.

the leveling controll thing sounds like it could be true... i was talking to my dad after i posted last night and he said sometime you can hear a hiss (like a leak...) from the car... and my mom said she had a LOT of bottled water in the trunk and it was making the "noise" every couple of min... SO, if this car does have the ELC system then it sounds like we have a winner here!

If the pump is working it'* easy to troubleshoot. Just turn the key on and go crawl under the back of the car and listen for the sounds of the pump and then the air hissing. Do not start the car.
I had a case where the pump didn't run and had to troubleshoot from the front to the pump at the back to find why power didn't get to the pump at the right time or at all.
It'* possible a hose popped off at the strut. That happened after Sears installed my new struts.
