2000 ssei climate control and compass erratically going out
I have a 2000 ssei, with intermittent problems. For about 1 week now, I'll just be driving along and my climate control freaks out and turns the air on full bore out of the defrost and feet vents. Also, the climate control goes blank, the buttons/***** don't work. And I hear a ding ding ding, and the DIC says to calibrate the compass, there is no direction indicated on the compass when this happens. Sometimes, if i turn the car off and on again, everything returns to normal. Sometimes it stays jacked up until the next morning. THis is pretty much a daily occurrence now, but I still love the car. Any help on what might be going on would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!
On a side note, I test drove the new GXP today...wasn't impressed at all. Beautiful car but felt really sluggish. I'll stick with my good ol'' 3800.

I had a very similar problem on my Aurora too. It ended up being a loose connection on the dashboard. not only does the radio not ahve any wireing, the dash, climate control, etc also have the ribbon cables. If the connection comes loose to any of these components very odd things will happen. You'll need to take your dash apart and make sure all connections are tight. On my aurora the gauges would act erratic. I'd loose certain gauges at times (they'd fall down to a zero reading) and the DIC would display -----------------, and the radio would lose its time setting. I think your climate control module might be the module with the loose connection however.
instrument panel ribbon cable (the other end of the panel has a matching ribbon cable.)

dash with DIC removed, radio, and climate control. all are controlled by the ribbon cables.

as for the compus...the sensor thingy is located in the center of the trunk. did you put in some new larger speakers. or do you keep anything metal near the center of the trunk. If so they will mess with the sensor.
Those circuit runners that are embedded in a thin plastic 'ribbon' ARE a PITA sometimes,.....I had an '84 Trans AM that every so often the gauges would go haywire, both dash turn signal indicators would start blinking fast, the tach would max out and stay there, and a few other crazy things would happen that I forget now,.....I took the dash apart and found that one of the ribbons(with several circuit runners/wires)was physically cracked and the runners were semi-severed....sometimes making contact(the way they should )and sometimes NOT making contact(causing the loss of ground and/or loss of voltage to a particular gauge, indicator light,etc).,........for a fix I took several tiny strands of copper wire for each broken/cracked connection and superglued them back onto the circuit runner, bypassing the crack, and then coating everything with clear expoxy(Very intricate and time consuming work)[I called it bypass surgery for the dash

Sadly, I had to take it to the dealer. Turns out there was an exposed wire on the drivers side back near the tailight that was shorting out. $175 out the door to repair. It was worth it, because the problem was getting worse. Thanks for the suggestions! I love my car again! If you're from NW Ohio Matt K. the Service Manager at Ed Schmidt is tremendously honest and accomodating.
