I have a 97 it will start and run for 2 - 3 seconds and die. the securaty light stays on. What would it be?

That is just the light testing itself, does it die? i.e. RPMs drop really low and runs rough until it just dies? or just cuts out? i.e. RPMs good and its like someone just turned the key off?

it just die like it ran out of fuel.

Go back out to car, leave door open, turn the power on. (don't start it) do you hear a high pitch whine coming from underneath your car in the back? Your listening for your fuel pump to prime. If you hear it, go ahead and start the car. If it kicks over and runs, but you notice its going to die, attempt to maintain idle by gently tapping your throttle.
