cars can make a lot of noises. is it a sqeak? a rubbing noise? a banging noise? a metal to metal noise? a rumbling noise?
either way from what you said the rack/pinion assembly may have issues, but it could be a dozen things..it would be helpful if you could describe the noise.
Jack the front of the car up, with the front wheels off the ground. Grab the tire at the top and bottom, and push/pull the top and bottom (wiggle it) and see if it moves and/or makes a clunking noise.
Could possibly be the upper bearing plate by the sound of it so far. If it happens only when turning the wheel and makes a 'thumping' noise a few times when turning the wheel, it could very well be this.
Does it make any noise when driving straight? Any changes in the noise depending on vehicle speed?

The above description lends itself to roughly 50-100 possible problems which is probably why no gearheads have chimed in.
Jack the car up as recommended.
Wiggle the wheel with your hands at 3 and 9 any looseness?
Now wiggle with hands at 12 and 6, anything?
