Default recalls

GM likes to do campaign recalls for non safety issues.
They notify service depts. that if anypone complains on a certain issue to fix the problem.
I once got free front brakes and calipers on aa x-body I still have at 60k.
The factory brakes glazed up and stopped working.

Well, My wife could absolutly care less what kind of car (minivan) she drives as long as its dependable and not embarasing like some of our college cars from back when. In other words I make all the car decisions. I owned a Toyota one time that seemed to always have expensive problems. I recall, as only one example, a bad CV joint caused from torn boot was some insane amount like $300 per sidejust for the part from the local auto store like 12 years ago. After that, and considering the premium you pay for used foreign, my motto is to buy foreign cars new and buy American cars used. I mean where can you get a car as capable and impressive (at least to me) as the late 90'* SSEi for such a low price in the new market. I always laugh at my friends who insist on paying payments or worse yet leasing a new car. I get no respect for my cars just because of the year regardless of mileage or type.

Well a failing crank position sensor can be a safety issue. If it fails while driving the engine will shut off and you loose power steering and power brakes. The air bag recall is certainly a safety issue.

GM recalled fuel pressure regulators because of a safety issue. When they fail they can cause a backfire strong enough to blow the vacuum supply line off the manifold. This allows the engine to run fine and go undetected because the leaky fuel from the regulator is no longer going into the engine...it is now dripping on a piping hot intake manifold that is surrounded by even hotter exhaust manifolds.

What it really boils down to is that just about anything COULD be a safety issue, it just depends on how the company and the safety commission view it.
