what transmission do i have?

It'* a 96 se n/a, I would like to install a shift kit any suggestions? and does anyone prefer a transmission fluid brand over another.
Haynes suggestions Dexron II, Dexron IIE, or Dexron III ATF, which one should i use?

for fluid, most brands market just "ATF" which works for most brands of transmissions. i just used pennzoil Dexron III/Mercon oil, and it worked fine.

At the time your car came out you had Dex IIE.... In 95 GM went to Dex III... Dex III wil replace the older Dex Trans fluid..

I recommend Coastal Dex III and you should be able to get it at Autozone
