My check engine light comes on sporadically..... the symptoms of my car is improper acceleration, i have to rev up 4 to 5000 rpms to increase my speed. the engine surges and the car gradually gets faster. There'* no jerking or bucking as the car switches gears. It just goes into gear slowly but surely. could this be because of a bad tps or transmission problems ...should i change the transmission filter and fluid...it engages into drive and reverse with no problems.

What year and type car do you have. Kind of guessing in the dark here. My first advice is go have the car scanned and post up the codes. Then we can answer your questions.

I don't believe this diagnostic procedure will work on this particular vehicle, as the Bonneville switched to OBD 1.5 in 1994, and retained it through the 1995 model year. Only special scanners specifically capable of pulling codes from GM 1.5 can retrieve these codes. Simply put, it is an OBD 2 plug, that puts out OBD 1 codes.

DO NOT attempt the procedure outlined in the above tech article.

Ack, yes, that was when they used OBD1 protocol and OBD2 plugs. For that you will need a OBD1 code reader with a OBD2 adapter cable.
