Default vapor lock? or....Crank Sensor Fixed!

my commute to work today [usually ~30mins] took about 3 hours...
It started about a lil' over 10miles into it on the highway...i had the A/C running and just got out of a mini-traffic jam [no more than 5mins]. As i was accelerating to get up to highway speed i lost power - and then the engine totally cut out. I rolled over to the side [with no power steering or brakes] and looked under the engine. First guess was the belt went - but that was fine....everything else was connected. the DOT was in the area [it was car breakdown day ] so they came over. I told him i suspected something fuel rated as the car wouldn't start on its own. If I pumped the gas a couple of times then it would start - and immediately cut off again. So he tested the fuel pressure by holding the fuel bleeder while i [tried to] start it. Fuel shot out and he said there was excellent pressure. I told him i just had the fuel filter replaced and the injectors were also cleaned not too long ago. So we both couldn't figure out the problem...so finally i decided to give it one more try and the car started. He suggested that the problem was Vapor Lock, but it usually rare - and usually occurs when its hotter than it was today [mid 80'*]. Nevertheless i got in the car and attempted to keep going to work...about a mile or two later it went out again...pulled into a gas station...waited for about 30mins...started again...went a few more miles [involving stop lights] and then it went out again...made it to a park and decided to just take a walk lol. So that time it sat for about 45 mins. Afterwards I made it into work [a couple of miles], but i stopped to get gas first since i was on 1/4 tank. Its now sitting in the parking lot...

So my plan is that hopefully it'll be cooled down enough to make it home tonight, and i'm gonna pick up some dry gas too.

My question is - was vapor lock really the problem? I did some reading on here and found that its rare in today'* cars. A co-worker of mine had a similar problem today and was told that it was due to the dampness we've had lately with all the rain & humidity for the past week or so. So that makes me think that maybe i have some water in the gas tank and since i only had 1/4 tank left that was causing the issue. I'm open to suggestions on what else might cause this problem because i want my baby running back to normal!!

hmm...i would say maybe some bad gas...OR...does it sound like its choking out, or just like you are shutting off the ignition?

im have a theory if u say its choking and then stalling....but if its just straigh stalling then I would say possibly it is POSSIBLY vapor lock...it does happen..SOMETIMES....it has happened to me with my car...and most of the parts in my car are in yours as well....not sure though....

good luck with it though!

it starts choking very briefly [at which point i look for a place to pull over lol] and then cuts out. Once that happens if i try to start it again it won't until i give it time to cool down. Only exception is if i tap the accelerater a couple of times and then try to start - and it will - but then immediately cuts off again. That didn't work all the time though.

update.

made it home without any problems....but i took it rather easy on the car. Brought some stuff called "Heet" [water remover] to put in the tank. Also brought another bottle of gas treatment to put in the next time i fill up. I really have no where to go tomorrow, but while its hot out i'm gonna take a short run & try to recreate the conditions today and see if it happens again.

I'm not real familiar with the '92s, but if I recall correctly there were problems with the baffles in the gas tanks that could cause cars to stall on corners as the tank got to around a 1/4 tank, and strainer socks in the tank coming loose. With having only 1/4 tank of gas, I'm wondering if that isn't your issue.

another update....

i'm aware of the 92 fuel tank issues when the tank is low on gas and corners are taken rather harshly lol. But i assure you this is diff from that.

Last night i drove the car to go out to eat with a friend...about 5miles or so...not problems at all. On a previous trip i also went down the street to the drug store...waited in the drive-thru for a prescription, and came back home - again, no issues.

Today i start the car up [with the a/c] on to go to Jiffy lube [about 5miles too] i get all the way there...park the car and boom, it dies. Doesn't start again until its allowed to cool 15 - 30mins...then it starts - i got the oil & tranny fluid changed and didn't even want to try taking it back home. So i left it in the parking lot [went to the shore with my sis] came back tonight and drove the car home - again, with no issues.

So basically its something that'* definately heat-related. And not only the car'* temp, but the ambient temp as well seems to play a major factor. Seems as though when its hot out, and the car reaches a lil' over 200*, that kills it. And it has to cool before it decides to move again.

I'm really at a loss here for whats wrong...lol

whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I see a big problem there. You went to Jiffy Lube.

Back on topic, I really couldnt tell ya what is wrong. My dad had a 85 Chevy van that did that when it got too hot. It was odd and we never found the problem.

Check wire connections, look over the coils and ICM for any cracks etc.

It sounds like it'* ignition related... only thing throwing me off is the pumping the gas and it'll try to start...gotta sleep on it.
