Default Valve Tap?

OK, this is probably one of those dead basic engine troubleshooting questions, but bear with me...

Whenever I get on the gas (boost gage nears 0) I start to hear a slight fluttering tap-tap-tap from the motor. At idle or normal driving it'* pretty much silent, but I definitely hear it when I push the gas a little. :(

Last time I drove the car (my wife usually drives it) I noticed a lifter sound when it first started so i checked the oil and it was a quart low - I changed the oil and filter right away and the lifter sound at startup is gone but not the tapping when I'm on the gas.

Does it sound like I collapsed a lifter and permenantly damaged it, or could I have bent a valve or something serious. Oh, and while I'm at it with the stupid questions, do '95SSEi'* have roller lifters?

Thanks
