Default trasmission question

About 6 months back I took my in to get an oil change. I asked the shop to check my transmission fluid. Since then when ever I have the car in overdrive it shutters on when I first start driving for the day and when I get up 55mph-60mph. I just changed the transmission filter last night and noticed there was ALOT more fluid in it than there should have been.

Would the trans being overfilled cause the shutter or am I heading for bigger problems? I have 183k on the car now.

You did check the fluid level with the engine running in park, right? I ask because the level shows higher on the dipstick when the car is shut off.

Before I drained the fluid yes, I looked to be a good inch over the mark. When I drained it while changing the filter I filled two 1.5 Gallon buckets. I know that can't be right. I'll have to check the size of the buckets when I get home to be positive.

Overfilled trans can cause shifting problems due to rotating parts "whipping" air into the fluid and the fluid losing hydraulic integrity. Let us know if getting the fluid level right fixes you up.

Two 1.5 gallon buckets completely full (12 quarts) would be alot of fluid for a pan drop; 7 to 10 quarts is more typical. Of course, maybe you were 2 to 5 quarts over?

It was a ridiculous amount. This twice now the same shop did something wrong and should have know better.

The shifting seems to be getting better,I really haven't driven the car that mkuch since I changed the filter.

I will say I didn't find any large metal chips when I dropped the pan. I however notice the magnet on the pan had a thick layer of grey film on it. I'm not sure how many time the trans filter had been replaced before I got it. My best would be it was never done before.
