transmission question, is this by design or do i need to fix

I noticed this while driving in a parking structure going from floor to floor. I put the gear all the way in 1st, thinking this would force the trans to stay in first gear, but it still shifted into 2nd but no higher. Once i got down to <13ish mph it would kick back into first.

My 88 if i had it in 1st, it would stay there no matter what. Is this perhaps a safety mechanism so i dont over-rev and blowup the engine? Or is my shifter not working properly?

Anyone else notice this before?

It'* normal. It will not hold first gear forever, which is intended to keep you from blowing the motor.

Yeah I swear series II motors/ drivetrains were designed with a lot of fail safe measures.

There is an issue here somewhere...

If you put the selector in 1st first will be held out till 40-43 or so for the L27... Then at that point the PCM will force a shift to 2nd..

It will not allow the trans to go back to first until the car has slowed to roughly 40 mph..

If the car is still shifting into second at a low speed even if you have the Selector in 1st, then you may have a bad Park Safety switch leaving the PCM thinking you have selected 2nd gear even tho you are in first...
