Default Transmission Question

I just bought another Bonneville. It'* a '95SE, but third gear is slipping. I want to rebuild the tranny, but first I need to know what kind it is. According to what I have found, it should have the 4T60-e. Is this correct?

Also, anyone know where to get/cost of a tranny rebuild kit? When I used to work for my Uncle, we got them from Transtar for pretty cheap but I don't know yet for this one.

You should be able to get under the car and read what the trans pan says. Mine says 4T60-E.

Hey, congrats on the new purchase. We both have the same thing. You should have the 4T60E in it. Best bet, look underneath at the tranny pan. It should say what it is.

Rebuild kits? I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest something slightly different. If you plan on beefing up the engine for performance, I suggest getting kits from Raybestos. They make performance kits for these tranny'*. Some others may chime in here soon. I just recently put mine back together, but I didn't rebuild it. Had to replace the differential in it. I have the ATSG manual for it if you need a copy.

Also, look on the top of your intake and note the date it was made. Hopefully yours may already have been replaced.

Come on guys... of course it has the 4T60e if its a 95 SE...

When you are with the car in person... Check the trans fluid before anything. Check to make sure it is normal deep red and doesn't smell burnt. If it is discolored and smells, get it flushed ASAP.

Otherwise if you have the money just replace the trans with a reman OR if you have the know how and the means to do so, just purchase a rebuild kit for it and get on it!

Good Luck!

I plan on getting the tranny flushed if it needs it and putting some Lucas Transmission Fix in it to see if that helps at least until I get the rebuild kit and the time to do it.

I do have the means and know how to do it, as I mentioned before I used to work in my Uncle'* shop and rebuilding trannys is something I had to learn to do.

Yeah that car has the 4T60-E. If third gear is slipping, the fluid is most likely to be burnt. Just to be safe, I recommend you get it flushed ASAP. cuz if the gear is busted, the etal will spread to the others and mess the whole thing up. I also recommend to get a new tranny from the Man. This way you could save yourself from any problems in the future with that tranny. The swap isnt very hard. Go for it.

OK, I picked up the car and drove it.

All the gears are slipping, except first and reverse.

I was looking into rebuilding it and found a website that offered replacement parts for the ones these transmissions always wear out. It was like steel replacements for aluminum parts and stronger parts than factory, but i cant seem to find it again. Anyone have any links?
