Default Steering rack removal

Hello all. Does anyone have experience with removing the steering rack in a 92-99? My Haynes repair manual says I have to drop the front sub-frame assembly to slide the rack out of the car.

Is this really necessary? It would be helpful to know ahead of time before diving into this project.

Thanks for any help you can provide. Matt

... for the 94'* it suggests that you have to lower the rear of the frame about 3 inches and has the added NOTICE:

"Do not lower rear of frame too far, as damage to engine components nearest to the cowl may result"

You have the wheels off by this time, and you pull the gear out through the left wheel opening.

They also make a big deal about having the wheels straight ahead and the column locked.
... and to make sure to disconnect the intermediate shaft FIRST, or you may damge the shaft and/or the gear.
