Default Starter problem?

Approximately one out of every five times we start our '99 SE, it does not turn over.
Meaning the key turns the ignition but it does not catch, never even reaches the engine.
We then try again and it starts right up like normal.
Is this a starter problem?

I had that on my 94 Suburban....EXACTLY the same problem. It was the starter. Sounds like a Warranty thing....or is it too late?

I had the same problem with my car 95SSEI.at first I thought that it was the starter, changed, problem was still there, second, changed the ignition switch, better but still there, changed battery, better but still there, getting very **** off by know.finally disconnected the kill switch on the alarm.problem never came back.I cann't tell you that this was the problem alone. I think it was everything biulding up to it.just letting you know what I went through.PS,I also check and cleaned the ground wire that goes from bat to engine.

IIRC, when my starter went (around 120k or so), it would click, not catch.

If you're not hearing anything than I would check the wiring.

I contacted the delaer where, a couple weeks back, we bought the car.
It came with a GM 3 month, 3K mile warranty.
Hopefully, this dealership will take care of the starter problem as well as the brake shudder.
Other than those two issues this car has been excellent.

Well, our Bonneville has been at the dealer the past two days.
They did machine the rotors and install new pads.
They also replaced the drivers-side-window motor which had been acting bad.
Unfortunately they were not able to diagnose the starter problem.......It'* an intermittent problem where turning the key makes a clicking noise but does not crank the motor.......Apparently all their sophisticated diagnostic equipment , inlcuding battery check, wiring, starter motor electrical flow etc.... could not identify a failure.
It'* a mystery.
Anybody here have a clue?
The dealer has been good about this, giving my wife a Trans Am loaner the past two days and offering to take the Bonneville in again if starter problem persists.
We're going to pick up the Bonneville tomorrow and document the conditions under which the starter acts up, i.e. outside temp, warm engine vs. cold etc....

I have owned a few GM cars that have had this problem. I currently have a 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham that had an intermittant starter problem. It would turn over one time and the next I'd have no power. Then it would be fine for a couple of months and then happen again.... same thing on a 1986 Cavalier. That one went completely before I changed it out. Luckily, it went at home. You could wait until it annoys you enough, or at least until it goes when you're out at the mall. I'd swap it out now while it'* still able to make it to the shop. Towing is expensive.
