Default Special windshield for HUD ???

The GM manual says that you have to make sure you get a special windshield that will work with the HUD.

Someone else told me this is a very expensive windshield. Does anyone have any info on this?

Yes, it'* got a special coating that prevents your seeing a double reflection of the display.

That wouldn't surprise me; they frequently get broken when the airbags deploy (especially by the passenger'* side bag, where the lid flips up and breaks the glass), so used junkyard ones may be hard to find.

I assume you need a replacement; would your insurance cover it?

FWIW, I retrofitted a HUD into our 97 Grand Prix--it has the "non-HUD" windshield, and it works just fine--no double displays, can still be read in daylight.

I've seen a couple theories online--one says that the HUD windshields have a special coating, the other says that they have gone thru a higher quality check that ensures there are no "ripples" in the glass in the area the HUD is displayed on--I have no idea which one is correct

I heard that you can get a special "filter" or "screen" that you stick onto a normal windshield that helps the HUD image... instead of forking out the money for a real HUD windshield. But again, I don't know the difference between a non-HUD and HUD windshield, but both times I had mine replaced, the glass repair shop always goes out of their way to phone me and ask if I have a HUD or not.

I don't know why he asked unless he didn't know from 88-91 HUD wasn't on the Bonneville yet.

They see all the other cool features on the car like the compass and the DIC and they figure it must have a HUD.... hehe. Also.. anything that goes that fast should have a HUD
