Default Screen on MAF Sensor?

I am replacing my MAF Sensor (see recent posting about MAF Sensor problems/ECM Code 34).

While purusing this forum, I saw a few references to "removing the MAF screen".

Is this recommended? If yes, why and what are the potential drawbacks and/or special considerations?

It'* up to you. With a custom intake it may work better without the screen. Just be careful taking it out. Check "MAF Screen Removal" under "Performance" and you'll find more help.

Some have had success and some have not. The typical problem is that it creates a poor idle and can sometimes through codes. This happens mostly in Bonnevilles with stock accordian intake tubing, and it is assumed that this tubing is causing air turbulance which gives a false reading from the MAF. If you are changing it anyway, remove the old one, re-assemble, and test drive it for a (short) while. See how it responds. If it runs crappy, put the new on in. If not, than you are one of the few that has a 'macigal intake'. Enjoy!

Default New MAF Sensor, the screen, and other stuff

Greetings All!
Today I took a leap of faith (on your advice) and replaced my MAF Sensor and cleaned the intakes. I tried to get a NEW AC Delco, but the cheapest I found was about $400. So, I found a remanufactured AC Delco at Advanced Auto (with a lifetime warranty) for $157.00. As it turned-out, it was incredibly simple to do the switch (easier than changing spark plugs) and the car runs sOOOOO much better.

As for the MAF screen, I decided to leave it in because it runs good enough for my purposes. However, when I get around to getting a smooth, duct-type intake 'hose', I will probably rip that sucker out and see how it goes.

Thanks again to all of you--- as a direct result of your assistance, I saved $100-$300 and the vehicle runs great!!! On top of that, it always feels better when I do the work myself (and I scored big points with the wife...). Take Care, the Reverand .
