If that were true, it would be the first time I've ever even HEARD of it. They do both go through the radiator, but it'* not really possible to mix.

Look for oil residue in the overflow tank. Being lighter than water, trans fluid would naturally go there.

well that is what i had originally noticed, oil residue in the overflow tank...that was the brown color on the very top, and the rest of the coolant looked normal

check the tranny fluid? Perhaps someone added some sort of water-wetter stuff to help cooling and it'* gone bad? I don't know.
