sorry about that

actually both prob. descriptions describe the beahviour of my gauge...you have to replace the sending unit...which requires a tank drain and drop...and the new one will eventually do the same thing. stupid design. :?

I plan on doing it once I get the part. If you do it, get a fuel filter at the same time because you will be under there anyway, it makes sense to do both.

Mike and Vital... For the tank drain...I'd like to suggest the easiest way to do this. Don't fill up. If you are getting any sign of your fuel level ever from the gauge run it pretty low and then drop.

The new sender from GM that went into my truck has been in for 3 years now and is 100%. I believe they have located the problem and corrected the issue on the new parts. (Don't know for sure, but never heard of anyone needed another).

Have fun guys!!!

run your trip odo...if you know your mileage...you can safely run the tank pretty low....i actually start looking for a gas station when my car cuts out around turns

in fact, yesterday, ironically, i ran out of gas coasting into the marathon station...i pushed the car the rest of the way to the pump. yup, the cashier got a kick out of that

I don't like pushin...I'll use the gauge and err on the side of caution.

I will have plenty of time to work on my car this summer as my job is a bike ride away, so hopefully I will be able to tackle this.

Running the tank THAT low is very hard on the pumps. Everytime you do that, you're reducing the life of your pump considerably because the fuel acts as lubricant to cool the pump.

When I say run low...I mean don't pull the typical car owner thing of filling up competely and then thinking your going to drop the tank easily. Get around 1/4...that'* what?? 4 gallons...32 lbs..not too bad.

good point on the fuel pump strain...i've thought about that many times. my job requires that i do a lot of driving...usually almost 100 miles a day. so i get tired of constantly stopping at gas stations. i tend to be a little lazy sometimes about filling up...so, if my fuel pump dies, i have no excuses
