Default Please recommend OBDII reader Update:purchased one from ebay

Current Vehicle - Pontiac Bonneville 1996.

I looked on ebay, there are a few in the same price range (and all non-compatible with CAN). Which one would you recommend (if any):

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ODB-2-Auto-Scanne...QQcmdZViewItem
ELM322 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ELM322-OBD2-EOBD-...QQcmdZViewItem

The last one has RS232 protocol, so it is PC compatible. How much of an advantage will this be?And I guess it needs to be connected to pc (laptop) to record data (doesn't have its own memory? I've emailed the seller).

I got an Actron CP9135 off of Amazon. At the time it was $96.00, but I just looked and it'* now $72.99. I've been happy with it so far. It does what I need it to, although I'm sure it'* not a professional unit. It came with some software for the PC, but all it is, is a list of codes and gives the same info that the scanner gives, so it'* pretty usesless.

Honestly..I haven't heard of the first/last ones previously.

What are your goals with the reader?

The goals are very important to your decision.
Things to think about.
Do you need to read manufacturer specific items? (like Knock Retard in our case)
Do you need data logging to a computer? (do you have a laptop)
Are older/newer cars important to you?

All these things factor in...being friends with many people here...I know of 1 or 2 that are looking to sell their current scan tools and move up. Meanwhile they haven't said/done it because they didn't know of anyone looking.

After considering all of the above, I decided to go with this, since I don't have a laptop and would be doing mostly minor fixes (e.g. change sensors).

That'* not a scantool. The only thing it will do is tell you codes.
