Default Now its Overheating

I was driving to a friends house to fix something on my car and my engine temp hand was in the red close to the 280 mark. This happen no longer than 10 min. of driving. So all I had was water, and I put some of that in to help and it still didn't really work, it kept it just by the red zone. I turned on my Hi-speed override fans to help cool it down but it made it worst. The radiator was sizzling also. Could it be the fan motor, freeze plugs, or my water pump. Since the engine icon appeared on my driver information disp. the code should be stored shouldn't?
