Default 96 Bonneville SE Runs bad and doesnt start

I have a 96 Bonneville SE 131,000 miles and just recently the car has been acting up. Itll run fine when its cold but then you shut it off for a few mins to go in a store or something when you come back out to start it it spits and sputters and sometimes quits. When it does run it has a very hard time gaining speed. I have it in a shop right now and the mechanic has it narrowed down to the dash because he said when the car is spitting and sputtering he slams the dash and all the gauges go nuts once in a while when he does it the gauges work and the car runs very nice. Im in desperate need of help because there is over 500 bucks in labor just to find out what the deal is.

Ive replaced plugs, wires and cleaned the throttle body and ground block on the floor by the drivers side door. Also when my friend put the scanner on it, it was throwing out a IC Circuit not toggeling code and a CKP Sensor code.

Please please please help with this. Any info will be great.

Thanks a bunch guys

He slams the dash as a means of troubleshooting? Sounds like you need to find a new mechanic.

How old is your fuel filter? Have you checked your fuel pressures at the rail with a mechanical guage?

Yea he did. It doesnt matter the car is a beater. Bought it at an auction found out last week that who ever owned it before unplugged the check engine light. Its in pretty rough shape now. The fuel filter was replaced last year. It sat in the driveway pretty much all the time so it didnt get used much. Any help would be great

Well, the first thing I would do is plug the check engine light back in (not even sure how somebody would just unplug it, but that'* besides the point). I'm sure that it'll stay lit up when you start the car. If it does, have the codes retreived with a scanner. If you don't have one, AutoZone can do it for free for you.

Let us know what those codes are. It'll be the best first step to troubleshooting.

My friend put a Snap On scanner on it, it was throwing out a IC Circuit not toggeling code and a CKP Sensor code.

Do you have the actual code numbers? List them all here.

Default code

Start with the basics. Clean the battery cables and grounds, pull all sensor connectors on and off to establish continuity. Put a fuel system additive in and pull the IAC valve and clean it.
Then read the codes and post them here.
