Hi,new member here with my first question.I have a 85 and I need to install a antenna.Has any one ever done this.I pulled off the rubber piece and threaded ring off the out side of the fender but the antenne still wont go up or down
I cannot see inside the fender to well but it looks like it may be connected to something inside the fender??
This is usually a simple job so am I missing something?

I believe you are our first classic Bonneville member! As for the antenna problem, is it a power antenna or fixed? I would purchase a good repair manual (chiltens, Hayes, etc) that covers the body repairs other than just typical bondo and dent pulling, one that is G body specific. This should tell you if you are missing something. Since most of us in here are H body (1987-2003), we haven't experienced that specific problem, however, it shouldn't be too much different than one of our antennas. First let us know which type of antenna you have, if we can't help you here, we know someone who can.

First off, welcome to the club.

I got a '95 but my Haynes manual covers '85-'98 so I might be able to help. Here is what my book says:

1 ) Detach the cable from the negative battery terminal.
2 ) If the antenna is nounted in the fender, remove the screws and clips and pull out the inner fender liner. If the anntena is rear mounted, remove the right side trunk liner.
3 ) Remove the sound insulator from underneth the right side of the dash.
4 ) Unplug the antenna leads from the relay and the radio. If the antenna is rear mounted, unplug it from the body harness.
5 ) Remove the antenna upper nut. (this is what you did)
6 ) Remove the antenna bracket screws. (The pic shows these inside the fender at the base of the rod)
7 ) Pull the antenna assembly up slightly to seperate it, but don't remove it.
8 ) Wrap the lead wire so it can be threaded back into it'* proper location.
9 ) Remove the antenna assembly and the old grommet or bezel.
10 ) Install a new grommet or bezel.
11 ) Feed the new lead through the grommet or bezel and carefully thread it through with the wire.
12 ) The remainder of installation is in the reverse of removal.


That is what the book says so you'll need to apply that to whatever type you have.

Its a standard antenna on the right front frender.I was afraid of that.Didnt really want to have to pull that inner fender ; oh well,thanks for the help guys
