Default Need power for underhood light

I mounted an underhood light off of a 95 Ei which I believe is mercy activated. I was wondering where I should install the two wires (power under the hood) to since I would most likely only want it to come on when the ignition is on and the hood is up?

I would either install a normally on switch that is turned off when the hood is closed, or just a regular flip switch that you can flip to turn the light on.

You may want to choose a continues hot, that way you have light even with the key off. Be sure to fuse the wire.

Maybe get something like this, and ya, like Dan said, fuse it. When putting in a fuse you want it as close to the battery as possible.

So the recomendation is to wire into the hood switch and use an inline fuse? Is a regular flip switch a good idea? I'm going to assume the hood switch shown in the picture is for the alarm?

The pre96'* that came with the light had it working with the headlight switch when clicked to interior lights. Wiring directly and having a faulty merc would leave the light on all the time. This would drain the battery. Although many underhood lights are wired to constant power.

I installed a 88-96 Chevy truck underhood light in the trunk on the antenna side and ran it to antenna (battery) power. It has a switch for off/on and a 20foot cord. The light it self had a magnet on the back of it for holding itself to any metal surface. This gave me the ability to get light directed exactly where needed. Many underhood issues at night are directly in the shadow cast by an underhood light'* position.

The underhood light has been installed with a switch installed inside the glove box. Thanks everyone for your help.

Won't that mess with the fridge/warmer project?

I stand corrected, the switch is in the center console, not the glove box.

Yes the A/C/warmer vent has been installed and operating as planned.

Thanks for the correction Bill, you one keen dude.
