Default Name this leak..

I have i pretty good amount of oil or something that looks alot like oit on the ground. I looked were it was coming from it look like a rubber thing by where my steering column is going into the engine bay. What is that?? Is it suppose to be sealed because it looks like someone tried to zip tie it together and the zip tie is just dangling there....

Intermediate Shaft Dust Boot. It'* not coming from there.

Maybe tranny fluid from the case cover on that side? Mine had a bolt missing there when I got it, Took about three days to lose a quart....

Maybe rear valve cover?

Try getting a mirror in there.

Place some white oak tag on the ground underneath where you think the leak is coming from. The next morning you can get an idea of what type of oil it is. If it'* reddish you know have a transmission leak(as long as the transmission oil was changed in the last 100, 000 miles). If it'* blackish you know it'* an engine leak. You also might want to clean the engine with some engine cleaner so you will be better able to isolate the leak. Good Luck.

Well, just today my shop diagnosed what I thought was a transmission fluid leak as power steering fluid coming from one of the rubber boots around the axle shaft. Seems it is leaking around the axel. Doesn't make sense to me but that is what they said. Said I needed a new rack and pinion as putting in a new seal would be just about as costly for labor and wouldn't last very long before leaking aqain due to flex. Their estimate to replace the rack and pinion parts and labor and four wheel alignment was $800.00. Gads! Hope yours isn't that! but it is something to look into.

Brake Fluid is mostly clear. Again, if it was not changed in awhile it might be somewhat darker.

$800 is a little on the high side(maybe that'* Canadian $'*?) Anyway for that amount the rack should include new inner AND outter tie rod ends, labor, and new ps fluid. But, yes, it is a good idea to replace the rack and not try to repair that leak.
