The check gauges light does come on with low fuel levels, but as Fatcat mentions it should not stall the car.
Since you are low on fuel, It would be worth trying to duplicate the situation with more fuel in the tank. Watching your gauges and really paying attention to the car when you try the test.

The check gauges light came on because the car stalled, you probably just didn't notice it immediately. Gas is definitely the culprit, and it is possible that your fuel strainer fell off of the fuel pump. When mine fell off, the car would die at every time i hit the brakes under 1/8 tank and would die under hard braking and downhill slopes at 1/4 tank.
