well i got curious so i just went out and played with it....the "firm shift into park" method worked...pretty interesting lol
anyway, incase this is a reoccuring prob, what should be replaced?

yes i encountered this. My P/N interlock cable decided to not work one day and had to take the whole console out and move the cable a little. After about 2 hours i finally got the key out. I now dont need the button on the shifter to shift out of park sometimes :?

Try to check the P/N interlock cable like Pat had mentioned...and go from there.....Just sounds like you have some slack in yours. Otherwise maybe you're being toooo nice to the shifter?
The ignition won't lock also if you have the e-brake set. It also won't turn on. You know it'* the shifter cable, when it still kinda moves, and if you are really strong you can still get it to lock. If the ignition cylinder was the problem, it'd be suck. It wouldn't move at all. I had this problem. It got to the point where the ignition wouldn't turn off. lock cylinder failed. Trust me, you'll know when the lock cylinder fails...

my dad did that with his old pick up too...you'd see him outside with a screw driver, a few sparks later and the truck was running
