Default Lower intake eroded. Cause?

The lower intake manifold on a friend'* car has eroded and the head shows some effects too. This is between #2 and #4 where the water pocked dead ends. What caused this?

I have seen that before with my engines. But not as BAD as your pics. I can only assume it has something to do with the coolant. I do know if its mixed with engine oil, it turns very acidic and eats metal.
