I am a new user. responding to an old informative post. I inherited a 1999 Olds 88 that was purchased new by my grandfather. great car and in good shape. I had the intake explode in pieces last week and this was due to the fuel regulator value. no recall on this car. called GM(got a case number) and my dealer. told there was no issue. luckily the car did not burn and I got it fixed. had to replace the intake, the fuel regulator and the fuel rail. $600.

Please in the future create a new post in the Oldsmobile section, instead of digging up a 9 year old thread.
Testing the FPR is easily accomplished by removing the vacuum line & feeling /smelling for gas.
Then run the vehicle for 5 minutes with vac line off, to see if the FPR leaks fuel.
Knowing the diaphragm could eventually leak on the FPR, I check it frequently and may soon consider replacing mine, as it is quite old now.
