first of all let me thank all of you whom have given advice on the repair and slow corrcetions of all the problems coming from (NEW) old car owners.

I have recently changed my powersteering pump, as some of you know. I had to replace some idle pulleys and thing, I guess the fluid from the ps unit got into the bearings and started making noises. I replaced them, and now i have a knocking noise like if you would have if the CV joint was to go bad. I guess my question is would the ps fluid cause the cv to go bad. My boots are solid and it doesn't make sense to me. so i was wondering if there is anything else that could be making the noise.

PS fluid has no connection to the CV axles.

It only adds and removes fluid in the power steering rack that pushes and pulls the tie rods that are connected to the wheels and steers the car.

i know that, i should make my question more clear,

would the ps fluid that sprayed form my bad ps pump get into the joint and cause it to go bad. even if the boots are all in one piece. Or should i look for something else making the noise

The CV could be making the noise..even with a sealed boot. Wear will happen even with a good boot.

No..the PS fluid couldn't hurt the joint with a good sealed boot. There is a ton of grease in those boots and it would have come out.

I now that you've said the knocking is similar to when te CV joints go bad, but if you don't think it is the CV joints, then could you be a bit more specific about the knocking sound?

When does it occur?

Frequency (how often)?

While turning left or right or both?

Upon acceleration? Deceleration?

Anyway, it may simply be time for those CV joints to be replaced.

i do not hear the knocking during turns, which is why i am questioning the cv'* to start with. it doesn't make a noise during exceleration or stopping, It seems to make the noise while the car is coasting along between the two. i do hear a noist like you would hear if you have a warped rotor at very slow speed going by an enclose area. like scraping. i put a dial indicator on the rotor and it is true. i have good brake pads. i have checked to make sure the new wheels i put on are not hitting or causing the problem by putting on my old ones for a test run. it does it at all speed and increases and decreases with speed.. but the sound is a solid knock. just in case it does not change with engine speed if you were wondering.

Wait, does it do it at ildle or slowing down mostly? And tends to go away if you accellerate?

i can be going any speed and if i take my foot off the accelerator, or bump it into neutral, and just let the car coast it makes the knocking sound. like i was saying in the earlier post the knock is in relation to the speed of the car not the engine. if i hit the brakes it stops if i hit the gas it stops.

But after you hit the brakes and the idle settles down, it starts again. Yup.

Look at the front of your harmonic balancer. You'll see the rubber facing insert has torn loose from the outer portion of the pulley. The two pieces are banging and clanging against their hard stops.

I've been through this on both my cars. Or if you prefer, just pull on one of your belts and see if the HB moves. I'm quite sure this is your problem.

like i was saying in the earlier post it is in no way connected to the engine. it will make the noise in relation to the speed of the car, not the engine. It has become a little worse over the last few days so i am just going to pull the front wheel and take a close look. thanks
