Default Inconsistent Traction Control

I've looked through a few other threads about Traction Control, but I didn't see any with my exact problem. It is on my 1995 SE.

When I will drive around for maybe a mile to 5 miles depending, the Traction Control Off light will come on and pressing the button will not turn it back on. I *think* the problem started either when I had my rack and pinion replaced or when the service station repaired a tire with a nail in it. Rack and pinion was about a year and a half ago and the tire was a year ago. Also, the ABS light is not on and I have never seen it on.

I took the car to the dealership today and they wanted $100 to just scan it, even if it is just a loose wire. I said forget that for now.

I know that I don't really need the Traction Control since the car is quite heavy, but my friends are always saying "You don't have traction!". Get'* a little annoying. Plus if I ever sell this car people might be worried to buy it with this problem. Not that I will though, I love my car.

What are some simple things that I can check/do to try and fix this myself. Note, I am not good at all when it comes to cars. All I have done to this car was fix a lock that fell in and install new speakers. So keep it simple and detailed if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Had the exact same problem with a '95SE. Unfortunatly never got it solved. Is the check engine light coming on too?

No, no check engine light. Just the Traction Control light, but like I said after I drive it for 10 seconds or 10 minutes depending.

It'* a little weird how it works. I just went to drive it now and it was on pretty much when I started up, after I drove like 20 feet. I got back from work about a two hours ago, then went out to pick up some food 30 minutes after I got home. When I went to work this morning, I did not drive it for at least ~16 hours and it came on about 1 mile after driving it. It seems the more it sits, the longer it takes to come on.

I would say a faulty wheel speed sensor. From what I understand they are hard to diagnose to know which one it is. And I believe they are part of the hub so you have to replace the entire hub. About $150 for the part IIRC.

Can check the plug for the sensor on the hub to see if it is loose, might be easier to do with the wheel off.

Yes, first thing to do is check all 4 connectors going to each wheel. Also since you had the rack replaced and a wire may have gotten hit accidentally.. follow the wires back and look for any problems with the wires.
